Arnold R. Brilhart (ARB) and hard rubber are a legendary combination in the design, manufacture and performance of superior saxophone mouthpieces. This particular mouthpiece is an excellent example of the high quality that this mouthpiece icon was known for.
It has taken on that dusky patina that vintage mouthpieces are famous for. It can only be described as a ''fat body'' model, considerably larger than a Meyer fat body that I owned in the past. The chamber is huge and the handwork within is very impressive. The tip, rails and table are in exceptional condition. I do not have an accurate tip opening device so I am unable to give you an actual measurement of the tip but it is marked 5. The rails are relatively thin and even, just what you look for in a quality mouthpiece. Should you desire to open up this mouthpiece, there is ample material with which to work. The Brilhart mouthpieces stamped ''hard rubber'' have always been known for the exceptionally high quality of the material used in their manufacture.
The bite pad shown on the mouthpiece was there when I purchased it and I have not tried to remove it. It is very thin and there is no evidence, visually or through feel, that there are any grooves or indentations on the bite plate. I'm speculating that the pad may have been applied by the original owner to prevent any damage to the bite plate itself.
