Vintage Alto Hess Saxophone
It appears that this vintage saxophone was produced by the Hess Company located in Klingenthal, Germany from approximately 1937 to 1945. I believe it is an alto sax as it measures 22 inches diagonally from the neck opening to the bow without the neck installed. The bell is engraved:
There is a serial number, 24040, below the neck opening. Opposite the serial number it is marked BO and above the serial number it is marked, 4K. The area below the opening of the bell is brass and the rest of the sax is silver plated. The sax is in very good condition with a dent below the bell and some minor condition issues. One key guard is bent slightly with a solder point that has come separated (pictured). There are some surface scratches below the opening of the bell. The silver plating is tarnished and has not been cleaned or polished and there is some small areas that are brassing through on the high points and keys. All of the keys appear to be working correctly. The finger buttons are topped with mother of pearl. The pads appear to be in good condition. Found with the sax and included with the auction are ten old reeds, a bunch of small key pads, a mouthpiece with a mouthpiece guard, and some solder. The old wood box appears to be hand made rather than manufactured. This great old Hess saxophone would make a nice addition to any collection.
