Here's a really nice older bassoon. Dating this instrument is hard as the company history was plagued by WWII, and almost all documents were lost. From the research I've done, I think I can safely say that this is pre-WWII, based on the fact that this was made in Graslitz, Germany (the company was relocated during the war). Regardless, this is a finely crafted instrument, made by highly experience luthiers, from the highest quality components available. This bassoon has not been played for many years, as it has sat in a closet. The inscription reads ''V. Kohlert Sohne Graslitz'' ''C.'' ''05705''.
After initial inspection (from the best of my knowledge), this appears to be in great structural shape. The outside of the body itself is free from any cracks on all pieces, however, after inspection of the inner ''bore'' rim of the bottom of the bell piece, and the inner rim of the tenor insert joint of the boot, each have small single cracks that appear to only go as far as the length of the metal brackets. Aside from that there are just some scattered light dings and some scratches, as you would expect from a near-century old instrument. There's nothing alarming about it's shape, and I would have to say that from researching other bassoons from this time period, this one is in exceptional condition. The body looks like it's been crafted from a beautiful cut of highly flamed maple, which only adds to the beauty of this instrument.
It seems like it's in good working condition as well. Unfortunately none of us here are bassoon players, so playing it is out of the questi
