Mirafone bassoon miraphone Puchner stencil?
This woodwind is no longer for sale (sold on 2009-02-12)
Price : US $1,000.
Mirafone bassoon. Serial number on the bell is 962. It is also marked ''Made in Germany, U.S. Zone'', which would seem to indicate it was made in the late 40's or early 50's. It has no high D key, but does have a whisper key lock.
I believe it is a ''stencil'', and was made by Puchner. Mirafone (Miraphone) didn't make their own bassoons, most were sourced from Schreiber, but some were Puchner, and I think this is one. There is an ''X'' marked in the wood on each section. Each key has the corresponding ''X'' on the underside. Puchner used Roman Numerals to match the keys to the bodies. Also, there is a letter ''P'' stamped on the underside of each key.
My teacher (who played a Fox 601) remarked on what a beautiful tone this instrument had. It is also well in tune in the lowest register, which I think tends sharp on many bassoons. I bought this to learn on, and I never really got very good at it. I no longer have time to play, so I'm trying to find it a good home. The upper tenon of the long joint has been replaced with new wood. The finish is pretty good, with normal wear around the finger holes. My teacher was able to play it without great difficulty, so it is in playable condition. I'm sure an overhaul would do wonders, but it does play as is. Comes in an older case. I will pack very carefully and ship fully insured. Unfortunately, I cannot send this on approval, but anyone who is in east central Texas (Houston-Dallas-Austin triangle) would be welcome to come to play test it. Buyer to pay $55 for domestic Priority Mail shipping fully insured.
