William Farre was a music director in Christiana (present day Oslo) Norway spanning the late 19th through the mid 20th century.  Farre was very influential in terms of early Norwegian recordings, he being the French Company Pathe Recordings representative in Christiana.  Farre lived from 1884 to 1950 but there is no record of him ever having produced a flute therefore his name on this very fine French made conical bore, Boehm flute is honorary. There were several makers of conical Boehm flutes working in France at the end of the 19th century.  Buffet Crampon, L.L. Lot, Cabart,  and  Thibouville Lamay are among the notable. This flute is made of very finely grained rosewood, with German silver keywork.  The posts are mounted on ribs and not screwed directly into the body therefore giving them the stable anchorage needed to prevent loose posts or binding movement caused by expansion or contraction of the rosewood.  The headjoint is unlined and has a professionally pinned and sealed crack running from the tenon midway up the back of the headjoint (opposite side from the embouchure) and is both stable and airtight. The crown mechanism is fully functional.  The pads are all new. The tenons have both been recorked and the key mechanisms are newly cleaned and oiled.  The tone holes are in perfect condition. Being conical bore (rather than the traditional cylinder of Boehms’ original “modern” flute) makes this instrument both visually beautiful and delicately rich and somewhat dark tonally.  But best of all it  is modern pitched at A%3
